Job Purpose

The Director General supports the Chairperson in coordinating and ensuring the effective functioning of the Commission, working with the Deputy Chairperson and Commissioners to drive high performance, results and impact across departments.

Key Responsibilities

• Support the Chairperson in identifying and operationalising Commission-wide priorities.
• Translate priorities into annual targets and a Commission-wide monitoring framework.
• Report regularly to the Chairperson and Deputy Chairperson on portfolio and service delivery.
• Support implementation of the AU Institutional Reform Agenda across the Commission.
• Convene Portfolio and Service Directors’ meetings to track progress against annual work-plan targets.
• Promote research, publications and knowledge-sharing across departments.

Qualifications & Experience

Master’s degree in Public Administration, Business Administration, Finance, Economics, Law, Management, International Relations or a related field, with 15 years of relevant professional experience, including at least 10 years in senior management (preferably in an inter-governmental organisation, national government or international institution) and at least 5 years of direct supervisory experience. The age limit for entry into AU career service is 55.

Reporting Structure

• Reports to: Chairperson of the African Union Commission. Three direct reports and two indirect reports.

Working Conditions

Based in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, on a regular three-year term contract (first 12 months probationary), renewable for further three-year terms.

Remuneration & Benefits

Indicative basic salary of US$100,017 per year (D2, Step 1), plus a 46% post adjustment, a housing allowance of US$26,208 per year, and an education allowance (up to US$10,000 per child per year for internationally recruited staff, or US$3,300 per child per year for locally recruited staff).
